What is Yoga and why practice?
Yoga is over 5000 years old. It is a philosophy evolving from the transcendentalism of ancient India. The Sanskrit word Yoga literally means to yoke or bind. It is often interpreted as "union" or a method of discipline. There are actually eight limbs of Yoga: the yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawl of the senses), dharana (concentration), dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (absorption). Asana, the physical practice, and Pranayama, the practice of breath control, are the most commonly practiced limbs of Yoga in America today. Asana and Pranayama are programs of physical postures and breathing exercises designed to purify the body and provide the physical strength and stamina required for long periods of meditation. These practices help build strength, balance and flexibility and can often compliment other forms of athletic activity, reduce stress, and improve our overall health and well being. At Perfect Balance Therapies, we offer a variety of Yoga classes in classical and therapeutic styles. Classes are open on drop-in or package basis and are suited to all levels of practice. Taught in a mixture of Anusara, Iyengar, and Vinyasa traditions, our classes focus on alignment, purification and moving in harmony with the breath.
